Lesson Learned:

Community leaders can be important gate keepers for justice services. Community leaders often decide whether a case of VAWG should be reported to authorities outside the community, can be perpetrators of VAWG themselves, and yield high levels of influence in community perceptions of violence tolerance. These leaders need to be engaged meaningfully and strategically so that they, at a minimum, do not block justice processes.

Lesson Learned:

Survivors of gender-based violence need integrated support services throughout the process to seek justice. This often involves land titles, housing, childcare, income generation, and psychosocial support services. Established relationships with organizations that can offer these services will help women to access integrated support that they need.

Lesson Learned:

Monitoring the progress of SDG implementation in the Arab region (and other regions where there is a lack of reliable/accurate data and access to information) would be more effective through the use of qualitative rather than quantitiative information. Since national statistics are highly unreliable and access to information is limited, work on SDGs has been more successful when the focus is on qualitative policy reform or when the work is highly localized to areas where statistics are reliable and information is accessible.

Lesson Learned:

The development of a new set of norms for electoral justice by the project was arguably not necessary. Most practitioners interviewed and who responded to the survey agreed that there is a large gap between the fast-paced nature of elections administration and the slower machinery of the judicial sector and judicial reform, but felt that there was already a large and well defined body of principles that applied to the issue, but which were not labeled as “electoral justice.

Lesson Learned:

Community advocates have the potential to be a powerful support network for supporting community awareness, navigating victims to justice services, and play a role in restorative justice processes as a survivor rights group. To optimize this potential, community advocates need institutional backing, continual skills training, linkages to institutional networks, and community recognition.

Project: Democratic dialogue in Palestine: Acculturation towards tolerance

Lesson Learned:

Participants confirmed the usefulness of the training and in particular the access they were given to decision makers in Palestine. The students particularly enjoyed the small group discussions involved. Both facilitators and decision makers commented on the enthusiasm of the students and their willingness to participate.

Project: Empowering the Voice of a New Generation in Pakistan

Lesson Learned:

A website was created which included a blog section for the youth. The site was easy to use and attractive, with places provided for participants where they could post their photos and news. It also provided a spot where newsletters were posted through to the end of the project. Little analytical data was available on the use of the website but the grantee reported it was underutilized, stating not all of the youth in Pakistan had access to the internet.

Lesson Learned:

By awakening participants to the concept of gender equality, the project helped change perceptions about the place of young women in communities, thus improving young women’s access to basic services and fostering their participation in social and political life. This could represent the foundation for a new culture of civic equality

Project: Strengthening Media to Promote Inclusive Democracy in Mali

Lesson Learned:

The project applied a “three-pronged approach” (involving the participation of government institutions (state services), media, and CSOs) which proved to be highly effective in breaking down barriers, forming new networks, and improving access to human rights and essential services in a highly unstable environment.

Lesson Learned:

The choice of grantees, with a “niche” contribution in complex contexts and with a high capacity for access seems key for any other initiative supported by UNDEF. In this, the choice of the grantee as a partner in setting up the project was the main reason for the success of this project; their knowledge of the geographical area covered by the project, their deep, longstanding relation with the institutional and civil society actors, their outreach to actors located in the most remote areas and their sound financial and technical skills were indeed factors leading to a successful implementation of the project, maximising its impact.
