Lesson Learned:

The project has done an excellent job of combining support to improve the situation of individual domestic workers by empowering them with knowledge and offering legal support, with a wider initiative to change the legal environment in which they operate.

Lesson Learned:

Secondary schools, teachers and students in Eastern European countries are often in a disadvantaged position, especially due to the unfavorable economic situation and very low

salaries; often hampered by a political climate that does not favor creative and democratic learning methodologies. Therefore, projects that try to break out from these constraining conditions and environment in secondary school education are much needed and should be highly supported.

Lesson Learned:

To strengthen collaboration between CSOs and States officials, it is necessary to consider the following:
a. The commitment of the authorities to grant authorisations for the financing and implementation of similar projects.
b. Planning awareness and targeted communication activities to overcome the mistrust and lack of motivation on the part of CSOs and youth.
c. Interventions must create spaces for dialogue and collaboration, managed by unbiased and trusted keys actors and facilitators.

Lesson Learned:

Bringing together groups of women in places where they feel comfortable talking and discussing issues can help build longer-term momentum for a shift in attitudes, even if this is very hard to measure.

Project: Youth as Agents of Democratic Change through Knowledge and Information Acquisition and Exchange in Laos

Lesson Learned:

As a result of the project local and provincial authorities have started to consider natural resource management suggestions. Using educational activities with youth as a way of encouraging them to propose solutions to mitigate negative environmental effects, was a way of encouraging discussion of more complex political realities.

Lesson Learned:

The project led to changes in the perception of civil society participation among the Vietnam Institute of Human Rights graduates and senior student. This led the participating journalists to encourage their colleagues to investigate environmental topics. The projects workshops and field trips raised awareness among future political leaders, decision makers, journalists and the local population about the benefits of the joint identification and development of solutions for environmental issues in Vietnam.

Project: Enabling Women to Participate in Sustainable Water Management in Armenia

Lesson Learned:

Without the team’s emergency management skills that have been developed throughout the decades of work at the national and regional levels as epidemiologists, toxicologists, and water and hygiene experts, as well as the donor’s flexibility, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Nagorno Karabakh the project would not have reached its objective and improved the daily lives of the target population. While the staff’s professional and results-oriented performance and UNDEF’s flexible approach allowed to not only deliver the intended outputs but also extend the project’s geographical and demographical scopes, it is generally important to consider various internal and external risk factors as part of a risk mitigation and emergency response strategy to ensure the full achievement of the project’s objective.

Lesson Learned:

Anecdotal evidence suggested that highlighting contradictions between constitutional or legal principles and the current operations of many local and regional institutions in Kazakhstan has raised civic awareness. While impact on corporate policy or behaviour was not measured it was widely believed that the challenging approach taken – if supported by bilateral donors – would not have been welcome in this isolated environment remote from Western influence.

Lesson Learned:

According to the grantee, a three-pronged approach, or a “triangle-to-move-the-mountain approach” literally translated from Thai, is necessary to bring about an enabling environment and long-lasting change:
a. Strengthening of networks and partners through capacity building, collaborative works, knowledge sharing;
b. Improvement of data, academic works, and communications related to the critical issues at hand;
c. Long-term investment in policy advocacy at district, provincial and national levels.

Project: Strengthening Media to Promote Inclusive Democracy in Mali

Lesson Learned:

The project applied a “three-pronged approach” (involving the participation of government institutions (state services), media, and CSOs) which proved to be highly effective in breaking down barriers, forming new networks, and improving access to human rights and essential services in a highly unstable environment.
