Lesson Learned:

Survivors of gender-based violence need integrated support services throughout the process to seek justice. This often involves land titles, housing, childcare, income generation, and psychosocial support services. Established relationships with organizations that can offer these services will help women to access integrated support that they need.

Lesson Learned:

There is a strong demand for legal support services, which only increases by offering this service. Projects must anticipate this growing demand and establish the mechanism to respond while also strengthening interinstitutional efforts to continuously provide these services.

Lesson Learned:

Community advocates have the potential to be a powerful support network for supporting community awareness, navigating victims to justice services, and play a role in restorative justice processes as a survivor rights group. To optimize this potential, community advocates need institutional backing, continual skills training, linkages to institutional networks, and community recognition.

Lesson Learned:

Training-of-trainers approaches are most effective when either the institution has a culture of internal learning, or where additional financial support is provided to support the internal roll-out.

Project: Youth local councils for civic engagement and social change in Palestine

Lesson Learned:

At the time of the evaluation, seven months after project completion, the Youth Local Councils (YLC) in Palestine were still functioning and most were scheduling new elections for the coming months. This was most likely due to the grantee’s approach, which bridged the gap between acquisition of knowledge (in this case of democracy, governance and leadership) and practical action in service to the community (here through the medium of the YLCs).

Project: Empowering the Voice of a New Generation in Pakistan

Lesson Learned:

The CBO partners were primarily used for logistical support by the grantee who implemented the project from its office in Hyderabad in Pakistan. The anticipated capacity building for partners did not appear to have taken place. Given their limited programmatic involvement, positive changes among CBO partners are unlikely.

Project: Strengthening Participation of Women in Geographically Deprived Communities in Local Governance in Ghana

Lesson Learned:

In future similar projects in Ghana there should be more focus and resources given to capacity building, to support training on CSO management, the development of board charters for CSOs, training on proposal writing training and basic financial management for CSOs.

Project: Strengthening Local NGOs in Areas Where Extractive Industries Operate

Lesson Learned:

The project considered NGO capacity weakness as an obstacle to implementation rather than a need that should be addressed. A wide range of topics, including an understanding of CSR policies and practices, could have been addressed in training courses – such as budget analysis, monitoring of oil and mining operations, tax laws, public information on government revenues and payments by extractive companies, information on other CSR networks – for NGOs in Indonesia.

Project: Education and Training of Youth for Democracy in Burkina Faso

Lesson Learned:

The project design failed to consider the reality of youth associations in Burkina Faso and to include an element aimed at strengthening the young leaders’ capacity. A civil society organisation is often reliant on only one leader and the most of those organisations lack organizational and operational capacities.

Project: Citizen Participation to Improve Local Governance

Lesson Learned:

By the end of the project, the capacity of the Citizen Participation Cells (CPC) was still basic. The CPCs’ technical capacity could be strengthened through working groups on different themes such as skills and municipal responsibilities and by paying specific attention to the gender dimension in municipal policy management.
