Project: Education and Training of Youth for Democracy in Burkina Faso

Lesson Learned:

This project demonstrated to the authorities the importance of giving real consideration to youth. The 500 young leaders accredited by the Electoral Commission as local observers on the Election Day were significant of the changes in the overall approach.

Lesson Learned:

Nine woman candidates trained by the project were elected in the 2013 parliamentary elections. The training sessions were an important first step, however sustained mentoring and support will be required to ensure the women elected can continue to promote the gender equality agenda.

Lesson Learned:

The creation of a women’s caucus in the National Assembly to promote the systematic mainstreaming of gender aspects in legislative proposals made gender issues more visible in Parliament. The participatory approach to identifying women’s needs was effective for mobilizing women across political party divisions.

Lesson Learned:

The project itself was focused on the Georgia parliamentary elections event and the structures created were not used for the remainder of the electoral cycle, notably the 2013 presidential election which was held within the life of this project, and the upcoming 2014 local elections.

Lesson Learned:

The effort was primarily focused on exposing problems in the 2012 Georgia parliamentary elections but any impact beyond this was unlikely. In part, this was intentional as the grantee did not want to further inflame the politicized context by widely disseminating materials that showed violations primarily by one side. But it was also a result of the one-off nature and limited reach of the activities. Enlarging the concept beyond reporting of just violations and embedding the project within the broader electoral process and its democratic meaning could have made this a wider, lasting citizen journalism effort.

Lesson Learned:

The project convinced women that free participation in elections was their right and had advantages. Before, women were obligated to vote for the same candidate as their husbands, whereas now they exercise their right to choose the candidate they want and their husbands are aware of their individual rights.

Lesson Learned:

The most significant result of the project was the election of a woman to the position of mayor of her village. Another woman was named as second head of her village, which had been completely inconceivable before. It will be important to consolidate and further expand these results, as it can be expected that more women will want to exercise their civil rights and wish to become potential candidates during future elections. However, women are often handicapped by illiteracy and they also need a certain level of financial autonomy in order to stand as candidates in the up-coming elections.

Lesson Learned:

One of the main project impacts was to get a significant number of women and the vulnerable population to go to vote. Rural women gained a better understanding of the importance of participating in the elections and young sex workers and street women who had never been involved in electoral events, got registered and went to vote.

Project: Youth Partnership for Improved Budgetary Governance in Lebanese Municipalities: Musharaka

Lesson Learned:

The project involved a specific activity on how to conduct elections. This resulted in the democratic election of five Youth Shadow Councils which has boosted the culture of democracy among the citizenry and the beneficiary groups alike.

Project: Engaging Civil Society in a Democratic Election Process in Sudan, Bahrain, Tunisia and Jordan

Lesson Learned:

The project created tightly networked, mobile elite of regional experts on elections monitoring, trainings, and provision of elections monitoring services. This made elections expertise more accessible in the region. At the individual level, the people who received training were more likely to continue to be engaged in community activism.
