Lesson Learned:

The project’s emphasis on training women paralegals was another key factor in sustainability, as the higher social status acquired through training encourages women to become more invested in their communities, thanks to the mechanisms for recognition and confidence building.

Project: Promoting democratic and human rights values among Rwandan youth

Lesson Learned:

An unplanned beneficial outcome of the project was that it enhanced some young people’s participation in economic development and income-generation activities. Some of the participants interviewed referred to other activities they engaged in subsequently to the training, including small lending schemes. A number of the young people in Bugesera who joined a district-administered vocational training scheme felt that the debating skills they acquired through the project helped them be selected for that scheme.

Project: Civic Participation of Indigenous Youth for the Strengthening of Democracy

Lesson Learned:

The process of training youth leaders raised civic awareness and supported organizational processes amongst young people in Guatemala. Although their understanding of civic participation as a tool for political change still needs to be strengthened, the lessons learned were highly valued by the participants who were empowered to include issues that affect them in public policy on youth.

Project: Improving the Participation of 155 Women's Groups

Lesson Learned:

The most significant result of the project was the election of a woman to the position of mayor of her village. Another woman was named as second head of her village, which had been completely inconceivable before. It will be important to consolidate and further expand these results, as it can be expected that more women will want to exercise their civil rights and wish to become potential candidates during future elections. However, women are often handicapped by illiteracy and they also need a certain level of financial autonomy in order to stand as candidates in the up-coming elections.

Project: Promoting democratic dialogue and social cohesion in the Western region of Côte d'Ivoire

Lesson Learned:

The project’s impact was most visible among the beneficiaries of the micro projects. For example, the association of women selling fresh products on the market in Bloléquin was able to create common interest among women from different backgrounds – locally born, as well as older migrants and recently resettled women. This association, created by the project, was able to lobby local authorities on behalf the market women on matters such as the allocation of market stalls and to improve the storage of fresh produce.

Lesson Learned:

The impact on beneficiaries in many cases was considerable. This was particularly true for women, persons with disabilities, senior citizens and single parents. A number of members of these groups highlighted the difference the project had made to them in terms of their enhanced self-confidence to take an active part in the proceedings of the Poverty Reduction Action Groups and/or Local Development Councils.

Project: Student Civic Action: Engaging and Empowering Emerging Leaders in Universities in Jordan

Lesson Learned:

Featured lesson) One example of the impact on leadership was a trainee who had worked in the Child Care Society in her rural home town of North Badia. As part of the project she identified illiteracy as a major issue and developed a literacy training programme for women. Being able to translate an idea into a practical programme was an empowering experience for stay-at-home women. It also had a multiplier effect since participants started encouraging other women to attend.

Project: Strengthening Civil Society and Developing Independent Media in Africa

Lesson Learned:

The project’s relevance was diminished by a number of design flaws. There was an imbalance between the objectives of the project – which concerned the development of media freedom and independent news, as well as empowerment of the poor – and the project activities, which were directed towards capacity building of the papers themselves and training. Training and capacity building were given priority over achieving enhanced representation.

Lesson Learned:

There does not appear to have been any attention to what newly empowered community activists would do after the end of the project. The continued progress of the expert group on elections monitoring, trainings, and provision of elections monitoring services seems to be something that was not explicitly considered in project planning. This poses a significant problem for sustainability.

Project: Women Can Do It – Balanced Participation in Decision-Making

Lesson Learned:

While the numbers of women candidates who won seats in the local and district elections of Moldova did not increase greatly, the greatest impact of the project was on its beneficiaries. The project enhanced their self-esteem and self-confidence, gave them the sense of being members of a community of women which transcends party lines and social divisions, motivated and empowered them to become active in public life, and provided the tools to enable them to do so successfully.
