Lesson Learned:

The project has done an excellent job of combining support to improve the situation of individual domestic workers by empowering them with knowledge and offering legal support, with a wider initiative to change the legal environment in which they operate.

Lesson Learned:

In designing a project that addresses knowledge gaps, builds and strengthens locally owned association structures and looks to improve the legal environment, PLA created outcomes that support each other, and the overall objective of the project.

Lesson Learned:

Language barriers can be a challenge for engagement with Domestic Workers, producing material in local languages – written and crucially audio – is key for generating knowledge.

Lesson Learned:

There is a particular need to involve citizens and CSOs in local development in Algeria. The framework, mechanisms, and tools for this participation are significantly dependent on experimentation, hence the relevance of funded initiatives which prioritise capacity building, experimentation, and learning.

Lesson Learned:

There is an important distinction between a better understanding of an issue and a change in behaviour as a result. Just because a voter knows that vote buying is illegal, for example, does not mean they will refrain from doing it.

Lesson Learned:

Training-of-trainers approaches are most effective when either the institution has a culture of internal learning, or where additional financial support is provided to support the internal roll-out.

Lesson Learned:

The project required a complex but clearly delineated division of labour and responsibilities between an external Civil Society Organisation and a country based Implementing Partner. This was well presented in the Project Document and was well managed during the course of the project, with the Implementing Partner providing local knowledge and relationships, and the Civil Society Organisation providing technical subject-matter expertise and links with the wider donor and international communities.

Lesson Learned:

Community leaders, organizations and networks are in need of additional resources between project cycles to sustain program outputs and outcomes. UNDEF grantees need to plan ahead, identifying and considering in their strategic planning ways to support the key nodes in regional networks through resources, capacity building, and network expansion.

Lesson Learned:

Projects spanning multiple countries should provide a detailed context analysis for each country of implementation. If the organization is not present in the countries where activities are taking place, it should be mandatory to present a partnership strategy.
