Lesson Learned:

The skills gained through the training positively affected the participants’ day-to-day work, including their business development efforts and their attempts to enhance their communication with potential donors. Some CSOs in Laos reported they obtained an international funding as a direct impact of the grantee’s training programme.

Lesson Learned:

The project’s manual was praised both by trainers and trainees for being a comprehensive introduction to the principles of democratic governance. The materials and outputs of the project including a documentary video could be used to reach a wider group of women via the grantee’s website.

Lesson Learned:

In order to assess the progress of the elected women beyond the project the grantee should strengthen its data collection. This will also help maintain their strategic focus. Remaining – and new – needs among the elected women should be assessed before embarking on new training activity supporting the women’s federations.

Lesson Learned:

The training methods used by the grantee were appreciated by the participants. Trainees enjoyed gathering for several days in residential workshops, away from their home. They described with enthusiasm how the training generated environments that were free of discriminatory patterns and full of opportunities for learning, sharing and exchange.

Project: Empowered Civil Society Addressing the Democratic Needs of Rural Women in Myanmar

Lesson Learned:

The low education level of many villagers made it difficult to achieve required levels of capacity building. Partners noted that some participants were functionally illiterate. According to one, only about a third of women participants could read and write fluently. This required training methodologies based on personal interaction rather than written materials and outputs, and limited the number of people who could assume leadership positions.

Lesson Learned:

A broader strategic approach would have made it possible to go beyond factual information and to use the meetings and trainings organized to identify local intervention strategies effective in a range of settings. The participating indigenous people asked for very functional tools related to the mechanisms they must follow when there are claims of or action linked to human rights abuses. If possible, these tools should take also into consideration the diversity of languages and dialects of Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, and Peru.

Lesson Learned:

In terms of effectiveness, the strategy selected for the training of trainers was not well designed. More thought needed to have been given to designing an appropriate pedagogical approach to achieve a more sustainable impact among the targeted indigenous communities.

Lesson Learned:

By addressing low-level officials at a technical level, the project further helped build the capacity of local government, thus addressing an additional need. Also, local officials were invited to participate on an equal footing in training sessions designed for community members.

Lesson Learned:

Training was effectively leveraged because it allowed participants to go on to organize additional human rights training courses within their own community. Knowledge about how to indigenous peoples’ rights was disseminated more widely at the local level and allowed people to make the links between their own situation and international norms.
