Project: Enhancing Women’s participation in Democracy in The Gambia

Lesson Learned:

Participants in the project reported that their self-esteem had improved and that they were more empowered to become involved in politics. Some of the women have become effective leaders and agents of change. Of those women standing in local government elections, 80 per cent had been trained by the project. To mainstream these efforts, the grantee could lobby government, opposition parties, and the Independent Electoral Commission to include a statutory requirement for a minimum representation of women in National Assembly and local government

Lesson Learned:

The beginning of the operation of “Upazila forums” not only helped women Union Parishad members to establish direct working relationships with sub-district level government officials in Bangladesh, they have also facilitated networking among the women from different councils to cooperate and jointly develop solutions to common issues.

Lesson Learned:

Women Union Parishad members in Bangladesh have moved beyond involvement in fields they are traditionally associated with such as health, education and social services and become increasingly involved in the identification and management of local infrastructure projects and the assurance of public order.

Lesson Learned:

The training methods used by the grantee were appreciated by the participants. Trainees enjoyed gathering for several days in residential workshops, away from their home. They described with enthusiasm how the training generated environments that were free of discriminatory patterns and full of opportunities for learning, sharing and exchange.

Project: Panchayati Raj Institution Action for Community Development

Lesson Learned:

The project mainly addressed social issues through women’s federations, which were recently founded in Haryana and Uttarakhand States in India. The federations provided opportunities for women from several Panchayats to share and exchange ideas on how to solve pressing local issues related to domestic violence, health and education. Former project staff – on a voluntary basis – are still involved as facilitators in the federation process.

Lesson Learned:

The project correctly emphasized the need to build the capacity of women to take part in decision-making processes, but it could also have included an element addressing men, to encourage them to support women’s involvement in such processes. In the absence of engagement specifically directed at men, the project ran the risk of appearing to be solely a support mechanism for women.

Lesson Learned:

Raising awareness among men about women’s rights is necessary to contribute to reducing some of the challenges faced by women who seek leadership roles in their community. The project contributed to changing men’s attitudes towards women’s role in the community: there was greater acceptance among men of women exercising a leadership role at local level, even though some men continued to note that this trend faces hostility.

Lesson Learned:

The project design put an emphasis on economic, social and political problems specific to women in the region: access to land ownership, discrimination, gender-based and family violence. It also aimed to support women’s participation in democratic governance by highlighting women’s concerns and opinions. In that sense the projects expected results constituted appropriate responses to the problems identified.

Project: Enhancing Political Participation of Marginalised Women in Nepal

Lesson Learned:

The male participants in the project were officials, trainers, and project managers, but not community members from the target groups. Although some women said they passed their newly acquired knowledge to men in their family, the project could have made sure that information reached male community members to avoid any exclusion or loss of impact.

Project: Women Can Do It – Balanced Participation in Decision-Making

Lesson Learned:

The project encouraged many women in Moldova to stand for selection as party candidates at local and district levels, while also enabling them to mount effective campaigns. It established a national cadre of well-qualified and highly committed trainers and women capable of being effective decision-makers. It showed large numbers of women how to network and collaborate with their peers across party lines and demonstrated the benefits of such collaboration.
