Lesson Learned:

The project fostered group learning processes that built trust and promoted respect for diversity. This effort has resulted in the training of a substantial number of young leaders who are actively participating in the Municipal Youth Councils and who are involved in concrete employment and social projects that address the needs of their villages.

Lesson Learned:

The project sought to strengthen democratization processes in rural areas focusing by on regions with a fragile social fabric and weak civil society. In this respect the multiplication of training opportunities provided by programme graduates through their activities in their communities, further enhanced the project’s effectiveness.

Lesson Learned:

A factor that contributed to the project’s effectiveness was the way that the conceptual and practical elements of the training were complementary. This enabled the youth in the indigenous communities to combine a critical analysis of the local situation with the implementation of practical alternatives.

Lesson Learned:

The issues and suggestions that were identified by the newly introduced youth organizations need to become more visible. The project could have enhanced the visibility of the youth policy through reaching out to media outlets and journalists sympathetic to youth rights.

Lesson Learned:

By the end of the project, the implementation of the public policy on youth had not been completed and depended on the adoption of a budget by the municipality. The project raised many expectations among the young people and in the communities. They wished to ensure the continuity of the initiatives. The project could have identified concrete initiatives to allow the newly established youth associations to address and push forward local issues of developed by the public policy on youth.

Lesson Learned:

The adoption of the Public Policy on Youth and the creation of the Municipal Youth Office are evidence that the project managed to establish a link between the youth associations and the municipal authorities in Guatemala. The young people appreciated the project’s training and building of the associations which gave them the opportunity to know their rights and apply democratic practices in Guatemala.

Lesson Learned:

The strategic approach of the project could have been stronger if the awareness-raising initiatives organized had also included men so as to complement those carried out with women. The project could have also distinguished between different age groups, focusing on young people, who are probably more open to adopting new ideas.

Lesson Learned:

One of the main project impacts was to get a significant number of women and the vulnerable population to go to vote. Rural women gained a better understanding of the importance of participating in the elections and young sex workers and street women who had never been involved in electoral events, got registered and went to vote.

Project: Youth Partnership for Improved Budgetary Governance in Lebanese Municipalities: Musharaka

Lesson Learned:

The project involved a specific activity on how to conduct elections. This resulted in the democratic election of five Youth Shadow Councils which has boosted the culture of democracy among the citizenry and the beneficiary groups alike.

Lesson Learned:

The project had a clear impact in building the capacity of youth in the areas of good governance, accountability, and transparency. Creating the Youth Shadow Councils had a very positive impact on the beneficiary populations in the Bekaa region, particularly because it promoted interaction among youth of different faiths and political persuasions. The young people consider the project to have been an initiation in social activism that enabled them to “do something together”.
