Strengthening Governance and Democratization Processes in Kenya and the East and Central Africa Region

The Strengthening Governance and Democratization Processes in Kenya and the East and Central Africa Region project sought to strengthen the capacity of governance and grassroots organizations and enhance the participation of citizens to promote a democratic culture in Kenya and East and Central Africa. Its intended outcomes were to: improve the management and execution of the mandate of the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (RPP); increase the participation of youth, women, persons with disabilities (PWD) and the illiterate in governance and electoral processes; increase access and the utility of the ACE Electoral Knowledge Network (ACE) in the East and Central Africa region; and, enhance the capacity of civil society, community/faith-based organizations in electoral monitoring, observation and reporting. The project objectives were relevant to the need to strengthen the electoral process and to support the knowledgeable participation of voters in Kenya in the run up to the 2012 General Election – which were eventually held in March 2013. The project was also explicitly designed to try to avoid the irregularities and violence of the 2007 elections by educating the public and strengthening local observation efforts by civil society
