Lesson Learned: Strengthening Arts as an Action to Stand up for Women´s Rights in Nicaragua

Many of the situations that arose during the dialogue with communities and theatre audiences surpassed the capacity for support and advice that could be offered by the theatre groups, female counsellors and/or advocacy groups involved int he project. Being able to call on the support of specialized professionals - lawyers, therapists, social workers - working in the field of domestic violence and sexual abuse of children is one aspect that needs to be strengthened.

Project Description
The project aimed to protect and promote women´s rights using the arts to communicate messages and to raise awareness of the challenges women are facing in protecting and promoting their rights, in spite of the existence of the Law on Violence Against Women (Law 779). The strategy of the project was built around two components: capacity building and awareness raising measures including theatre production and artistic expression; and preventive actions to solve key problems linked to the implementation of Law 779. The project was relevant, as it was carried out at a time of polarization and controversy over the passing of Law no. 779 on Violence against Women (2012) and the reform of this law in 2013. With the aim of making the issue visible, the project relied on promoting collaboration and alliances and mobilizing women’s organizations, civil society actors and local authorities.

Lesson Learned: Strengthening Arts as an Action to Stand up for Women´s Rights in Nicaragua

The geographic scope of the project was a little ambitious given the qualitative changes that were being pursued and the desire to consolidate and capitalize on the results. Focusing activities in a more limited geographical space would have made it easier to go into more depth and to sustain the results.

Project Description

Lesson Learned: Support for Youth Involvement in Electoral Processes in Gabon

The project contributed to the decision of three young people to stand as candidates during the local elections in 2013. The example of the “Rassemblement des Jeunes Patriotes Gabonais” also demonstrated that the project has stimulated young people to get involved in the electoral process to openly demand that issues such as lack of integration and poverty are addressed.

Project Description
The project aimed to address needs of the Gabonese youth to participate in electoral processes. The project had three components: social mobilization – including motivating young people to participate and engage in politics; strengthening the leadership of youth – including integrating young people in the spheres of influence within their local area; and advocacy which aimed to stablish local forums for young leaders in democracy. The project encountered some challenges including education strikes, and the refusal of some educational leaders to let young people participate. Despite the difficulties encountered, the grantee's efforts still resulted in some remarkable results. The project was particularly successful in encouraging school and university students to speak their mind. The evaluators were also impressed by the variety of communication products, such as educational materials and publications, both in digital version in hard copy, as well as by the quality of professionally produced advertising spots and by the discussions broadcasted on television.

The project completed only half of its planned activities. While certain outputs fell short of their target, others were characterized by duplication without any benefit from the additional activity.

The resources needed to accomplish each sub-activity were not defined in advance in a realistic way. In some cases this impacted on other budgeted activities which could not be carried out. The actual costs of the social mobilization activities were very high given the poor results.

The project should have implemented a more integrated and transparent approach so as to include all the various regional partners. This would have resulted in a more realistic estimate of costs and the required professional skills.

Lesson Learned: Empowered Civil Society Addressing the Democratic Needs of Rural Women in Myanmar

A strong focus on the local - village and tract – in Myanmar made the project relatively independent of political developments at the national level, since activities such as capacity building could be carried out in a self-contained manner.

The project was exemplary in its effectiveness, both in terms of the clarity of outcomes to be achieved (and activities to achieve them) and of quantitative and qualitative standards of achievement. It raised awareness of voters’ and women’s rights, and initiated engagement between local officials and rural communities. This is also an example of a project where sustainability was included in the design. The capacity building activities included supporting partner organizations achieve a degree of financial independence, by providing technical advice on project design and management, and by helping them develop internal governance and accountability systems.

Lesson Learned: Empowered Civil Society Addressing the Democratic Needs of Rural Women in Myanmar

By addressing low-level officials at a technical level, the project further helped build the capacity of local government, thus addressing an additional need. Also, local officials were invited to participate on an equal footing in training sessions designed for community members.

Lesson Learned: Empowered Civil Society Addressing the Democratic Needs of Rural Women in Myanmar

By targeting district-based officials in charge of specific tasks, such as animal husbandry or cash crops, the project was able to engage officials in a dialogue in issues where there could be consensus While such officials were less powerful than district administrators; they were also more likely to address communities’ practical concerns.

Lesson Learned: Empowered Civil Society Addressing the Democratic Needs of Rural Women in Myanmar

The project was designed in close consultation with project partners. Their experience was taken into account, and they were the backbone of implementation. The, grantee’s role was focused on coordination, financial management and aspects of technical support. Partners’ long-standing experience working with rural women’s groups was a key element of project performance, because activities were designed in the light of past experience on aspects such as the size and composition of women’s groups, options for income generating activities.
