Lesson Learned:

The project could have further developed the printed support material and continued distributing it to paralegals so that it could be replicated and assimilated into other ongoing activities. The material should have been more didactic while maintaining a flexible format. The material should have been written in the local language with a more manageable length using clear examples and visual illustrations.

Project: Honduran Youth for Democracy

Lesson Learned:

The training educated beneficiaries about their rights, which helped strengthen youth leadership and led to the development of associative forums. The project’s training materials were outstanding, and they are being used in community replications of the training courses.

Project: Enhancing Women’s participation in Democracy in The Gambia

Lesson Learned:

The project’s manual was praised both by trainers and trainees for being a comprehensive introduction to the principles of democratic governance. The materials and outputs of the project including a documentary video could be used to reach a wider group of women via the grantee’s website.

Lesson Learned:

Projects with a regional focus should involve participants from that region and ensure their products are tailored to the regional context. Even then products should still be adapted to each specific country context while reflecting universal standards. The purpose for country level efforts should be clearly defined with well-specified implementation guidelines for partners.

Project: Strengthening Municipal Capacity for Access to Public Information in El Salvador

Lesson Learned:

The project developed materials and tools of excellent quality. However, participants asked for the materials to be adapted to other types of audiences in order to achieve a greater coverage among children, youth, elderly people, and people with special needs, among others. In some cases, teachers in educational centres offered to adapt the materials to suit their audiences.

Project: Strengthening Municipal Capacity for Access to Public Information in El Salvador

Lesson Learned:

The project developed materials and tools of excellent quality. These contributed to extending knowledge among the various beneficiaries in El Salvador. The materials became a key component for sustainability since they could be used in future initiatives. Resources such as the ‘Citizen Education booklet: the Right to Access Public Information in the Municipality’, was based on the specific needs and experiences of the target audience.

Project: Nigeria Procurement Monitoring Project

Lesson Learned:

The preparation and publication of the Procurement Observation Handbook built on previous efforts. It is also being used elsewhere in West Africa, and has been provided to the World Bank IDF program and Open Society Initiative for West Africa on request for translation to French for use in French-speaking West African Countries. Feedback on the manual from those interviewed for the evaluation was extremely positive.

Project: Leadership for accountable governance in Southern Africa

Lesson Learned:

Insufficient attention was paid to the gender appropriateness of the training materials in Southern Africa Insufficient attention was also paid to political and indeed racial tensions that might reasonably be expected to occur in groups that brought together people from 10 African nations. Some of the training materials exhibited poor judgement in relation to comments about political leaders.

Project: Involving women and youth CSOs in strengthening democratic debate and public news media around elections in Afghanistan

Lesson Learned:

The grantee made efforts to provide balanced programming in its round tables and reporting in Afghanistan, but this was offset by the predominate use of Pashto in some media products and a focus on problems rather than solutions in many of the media products. Ensuring language balance was especially important as the campaigns became polarized along ethnic lines, and to avoid marginalizing the majority Dari speaking population from the project and its benefits.
