Project: Defence of Vulnerable People and Democracy Restoration for Workers in the Exploitation of Mines in Democratic Republic of Congo
Evaluation Date: August 2018
Report: [report link]
Lesson Learned:

In areas where long-distance travel is difficult, it is important to take this into account in project design. The legal clinics provided to miners in this project would have had greater impact if there were more of them or if they were provided with means of transport. The distance between clinics prevented those in need from taking advantage of the legal resources provided to them.

Lesson Learned:

Knowledge of the characteristics of the target group is of paramount importance to effective project implementation. The target group in question in this project was Congolese miners. The miners frequently move from one mine site to another depending on whether ores are easy to find or facilities are offered by traders or well owners. Thus, a better awareness of this target group requires that in addition to theoretical training, documents be made accessible to wherever they travel.

In order to increase the efficiency of radio broadcast awareness campaigns, these programs need to be interactive and broadcast on local radio in the local language.

Lesson Learned:

Steps must be taken to ensure the effective participation of public officials. Activities involving the intervention of the public authorities must be planned ahead of time because of their possible unavailability related to their positions. The activities targeting public officials require the involvement of their leaders in their implementation, otherwise there is no guarantee of their participation, especially when it comes to activities organized by public associations related to the defense of human rights. Lastly, for greater impact, training activities should target as many leaders as possible in different localities.

Project: Developing alternative models of natural resource governance based on indigenous community participation in Aceh
Evaluation Date: July 2016
Report: [report link]
Lesson Learned:

The project could have capitalised on existing successful natural resource governance models and fostered exchanges of experiences among Mukim communities. The needs that should have been addressed by the project involved strengthening of Mukim capacity to rule and manage their natural resources with a good knowledge of local constraints and specificities. Therefore, sharing lessons learned from other Mukims or other indigenous communities’ experiences could have played a key role in disseminating methodologies and techniques about governing natural resources.

Report: [report link]
Lesson Learned:

There had been extensive mapping of Mukims in Indonesia previously, but the project did not take advantage of this to further develop the mapping to include gender needs, household spending, natural resource zoning, nor to define the extent to which alternative models could promote Mukim communities’ economic and social cohesion. As a consequence, none of the existing mappings were associated with the project’s financial, implementation or monitoring strategies and women and vulnerable groups stayed outside of the development of the natural resource governance process.
