Lesson Learned:

Elderly welfare and fulfilment of their rights is a complex matter that require multi-dimensional interventions. Based on the experience of the elderly project implemented by LBH Apik, “soft” entry points like health, social gatherings, and economic opportunities have proven to be much effective as a way to gather and motivate the elderly to learn more about their rights. This can be a model for future interventions.

Project: Strengthening Media to Promote Inclusive Democracy in Mali

Lesson Learned:

Without losing sight of the importance of Civil and Political Rights, a focus on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights can be more impactful in certain restricting contexts, and pave the way (e.g., with “transitional” authorities) for the advocacy of a wider spectrum of human rights when circumstances allow.

Project: Empowering Rural Communities in Bhutan through Mass Media

Lesson Learned:

In a country like Bhutan, where culture is overwhelmingly dominant in every aspect of life and policies and seen separately from democracy, implementing a project that promotes democracy through strengthening media is not without challenges. Bhutan is ambitious to make the cultural perspective visible in all development co-operation and projects, which suggests a “mainstreaming” approach. Since culture is a complex concept and naturally varies considerably from country to country, mainstreaming is difficult. But, at the project level, it would be more appropriate to address culture using a rights perspective that focuses on freedom of expression and information. Nevertheless, it would be highly relevant to systematically include the roles of culture in media development and the promotion of democracy and democratic institutions.

Project: Empowering Female and Youth Domestic Workers in Uganda

Lesson Learned:

Accessing Domestic Workers who are live-in, rather than live-out requires a different approach, given the difficulties in undertaking door-to-door engagement. There are still many domestic workers isolated and unaware of their rights.

Lesson Learned:

Introducing stakeholders to data-driven journalism is a good entry point for broader debates on rights issues and interaction with the government.

Lesson Learned:

The training itself was well-structured and involved separate training sessions for journalists and CSO/NGO representatives followed by joint sessions of both groups plus editors. The content itself was highly engaging and relevant to participants teaching them about human rights but also building their professional skills; and involving both theoretical and field based training.

Lesson Learned:

It was clear that the political situation in the Palestinian Territories and in particular the imposition of movement restrictions, the impasse in peace negotiations and the continued frustration of the Palestinians, limited the impact of the projects at a wider societal level. This limitation was of course beyond the control of the grantee.

Lesson Learned:

Restrictions on movement in Palestine were taken into account in project implementation as far as possible, however they are a significant hurdle to full implementation and effectiveness as well as to impact.

Project: Democracy for Women’s Rights in Sindh, Pakistan

Lesson Learned:

An especially important impact of the project was that it encouraged a large number of women to obtain national identity cards, a potentially life-changing event for many. During the 2010 floods in this area there had been a general awareness raising of the rights associated with identity cards but the project converted this general knowledge into a concrete entitlement to public relief.

Project: Promoting democratic and human rights values among Rwandan youth

Lesson Learned:

The project was mostly focused on explaining the domestic and international laws and policies underpinning democratic processes and human rights, and did not give sufficient attention to enhancing trainers’ pedagogical and training skills. As a the grantee acknowledged that the trainers had acquired a good understanding of democracy and human rights issues, but did not know precisely how to convey this knowledge to groups of younger, less educated people.
