Lesson Learned:

External coherence and synergy between the organisation’s different projects/interventions require a minimum of formal and systematic coordination such as the collaboration that took place with a feminist platform in the case of this project.

Project: Empowering the Voice of a New Generation in Pakistan

Lesson Learned:

Links were made with some universities that contributed to several project events, such as a national conference, but there were no links demonstrated with other youth or democratic governance efforts underway in Pakistan, including a similar UNDEF funded project for youth done in some of the same locations as this project.

Project: Promoting Good Governance among Tribal Inhabitants in Bangladesh (PROGGATI)

Lesson Learned:

The cascade nature of the project structure made it possible for the grantee to reach the grass roots, but the distances – in terms of time to travel – were great, which limited the ability of the grantee to monitor activities and provide mentoring at the community level. The project did not develop synergies with other ongoing projects, several of which were governance related and which could have helped extend its reach and increased its impact.

Project: Strengthening the Political Participation of Communities of Former Slaves

Lesson Learned:

The grantee combined the project activities in Mauritania with its other food security activities to improve the beneficiaries’ participation in the project. The emphasis on women, community leaders and youth was effective in reaching a wide audience.

Project: Strengthening Governance and Democratization Processes in Kenya and the East and Central Africa Region

Lesson Learned:

The grantee was unaware that there was another UNDEF-funded project in Kenya at the same time also focused on supporting the electoral processes. No coordination was established between these initiatives, and the two grantees in some cases ran parallel activities. Hence, the grantee missed out on logical synergy effects which could have strengthened the effectiveness and impact of both projects.

Project: Representation and political participation of five urban indigenous populations in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

Lesson Learned:

The project did not treat these situations – conflicts and differences of opinion – as an educational exercise in acceptance, tolerance, and negotiation as well as it could have; had it done so, it might have fostered synergies and prevented the pointless weakening of indigenous populations committed to fighting for the defense and recognition of their rights.

Lesson Learned:

Project activities could have been made more effective had they not been done in isolation from the other good governance and anti-corruption work being done in Albania. Developing synergies with other projects and organizations working on the same issues could have ensured follow-up to the issues uncovered by the grantee reports and Union activities. Link investigative reports with civic and legal action to maximize their effectiveness and ensure accountability. Work with other civil society organizations government Ombudsmen and other organizations, such as international non-governmental organizations working on issues of freedom of the media, protection of journalists and anti-corruption, as well as international organizations such as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and other donor programs.
