Lesson Learned:

Advocacy projects in highly complex contexts require rigorous monitoring to (i) strengthen coalitions and ties despite changes to the positions of stakeholders and changing power dynamics; and to (ii) capture and adapt to the different levels of changes that could occur.

Lesson Learned:

External coherence and synergy between the organisation’s different projects/interventions require a minimum of formal and systematic coordination such as the collaboration that took place with a feminist platform in the case of this project.

Lesson Learned:

There are important elements that influence the effectiveness of the implementation of an advocacy project other than the technical and financial capacity of the funded organisation. They include:
– The clarity of the organisation’s internal strategy and the consistency of its positioning regarding the project’s objective.
– The credibility of the organisation and its members among CSOs and drivers of change relevant to the intervention.
– The social capital of the organization, which enables it to mobilize key stakeholders and allies in the field.
– The capacity of the organisation to analyse the political context, manage risks, and adapt activities to the situation.

Lesson Learned:

Awareness raising activities should be strategic as well as tactical, for increased long-term effect. Activities should maximize the number of people reached, and the message should be focused and applied locally. Also include accurate indicators and means of verification in order to assess if there were any changes or impact, positive or negative, foreseen and unforeseen, on democratization.

Lesson Learned:

Networking to gather participants in training sessions should be conducted after there has been clear scoping of potential existing resources. The reliance solely on social media and personal connections limits diversity, and the lack of involvement of the grantee also limits the credibility and legitimacy of trainers to attract participants.

Lesson Learned:

Projects spanning multiple countries should provide a detailed context analysis for each country of implementation. If the organization is not present in the countries where activities are taking place, it should be mandatory to present a partnership strategy.

Lesson Learned:

One of the project’s objectives was to combat the exodus from rural areas and the lack of employment opportunities for young village people. This problem remains. Concerted action with other actors from civil society politics could raise awareness among actors at the State level to address this problem.

Lesson Learned:

The high quality of the technical and financial management of the project including ongoing monitoring and providing different modes of assistance helped to optimize project efficiency.

Lesson Learned:

The Municipal Youth Councils are venues where young people can open a dialogue and strengthen their civic participation in institutions. The creation of these councils has not only made it possible to organize group activities for young people and heighten their visibility, but to ensure the accountability of youth council leaders. The participating youth were convinced, engaged, and well-organized; they have established concrete plans of action and in several cases managed to obtain financial support from the municipality.

Lesson Learned:

The project created opportunities for young people from different groups to get to know each other through cultural and sporting events suggested by the young people themselves. These experiences have helped them appreciate the concepts of integration and acceptance of others and enabled them to understand the importance and benefits of engaging with each other, deliberating and working together, forging friendly ties between neighbouring villages, and breaking social, religious, and community taboos.
