Lesson Learned:

Foreign funding is a matter of controversy and concern in Kyrgyzstan, especially as it relates to media engagement. UNDEF’s support proved valuable as a neutral, credible, and legitimate source of funding. It allowed for activists and journalists from very different regions, political views, social backgrounds to meet and work together, without prejudice, and achieve results from productive and meaningful collaborations.

Lesson Learned:

Software and tools developed in a project may have different applications beyond the initial concept. In spite of the issues linked to different understandings of “Maidan” app, the tool has potential to be highly useful and efficient for journalists and other actors alike. It is important for both the grantee and UNDEF to consider other applications of specific software development or upgrades beyond the scope of the project for sustained impact.

Lesson Learned:

A platform allowing journalists to detail the background of their created a consolidated network of like-minded professionals. The project’s “Maidan” platform became a space for journalists, citizen journalists, and engaged individuals to access continuing professional development of contributing to the professionalization of journalism in Jordan and elsewhere.

Project: Rural Media Development for Promoting Democracy and Human Rights

Lesson Learned:

The training materials and techniques were effective. The training was based on a standardised 57 page training manual covering everything from training techniques through to democracy and human rights issues, the international and local context and laws, human rights mechanisms, the security and responsibility of journalists, defamation, use of social media, and professional skills – preparing, authenticating, cross checking reports, handling sources etc. The training involved a combination of lectures, group work and field visits.

Project: Strengthening Democracy through Freedom of Expression and Peace Agenda for Journalists in Colombia (Colombia)

Lesson Learned:

The project has been of strategic importance to the grantee. The grant enabled them to produce new work and raise new issues and priorities that have served as a catalyst – originally unintended – to develop into more of a think tank, through its new Centre of Studies, without losing its core mission of support and protection for journalists at risk or under threat. This has enhanced its standing with the Government of Colombia as a “consultant body”.

Lesson Learned:

The project had a positive impact on the artists involved and to a lesser extent the journalist trainees. The Freedom Messenger artists interviewed saw the project as opening a door to new audiences and new ideas for their work. However this was limited by the funds made available to them. The journalists interviewed were similarly enthusiastic and saw positive benefits from their participation in the training and in the Freedom Messengers Network.

Project: Citizen Journalists for Free and Fair Elections in Georgia

Lesson Learned:

The system of using the grantee’s institutional website as a place where concerned persons could have their reports posted was sustainable as long as the grantee in Georgia is in a position to continue to maintain its website. At the time of evaluation, the reports were still posted there and available to read. Having gained the experience of operating this type of a project, the grantee has extended also extended to other projects related to civic education.

Project: Civic Participation of Indigenous Youth for the Strengthening of Democracy

Lesson Learned:

The issues and suggestions that were identified by the newly introduced youth organizations need to become more visible. The project could have enhanced the visibility of the youth policy through reaching out to media outlets and journalists sympathetic to youth rights.

Project: Promoting Human Rights through Providing Access to Information for Marginalized Women in Zimbabwe

Lesson Learned:

The project did not fully reflect on the strategic implications of supporting citizen journalists or bloggers. In at least some locations, professional journalists perceived citizen journalists as competitors, and there were reciprocal accusations of plagiarism and misuse of images, pitting bloggers/citizen journalists against professional journalists. The concerns expressed on both sides were made sharpened by the very precarious economic situation of many journalists, professional and citizen alike.

Lesson Learned:

Bloggers and journalists benefit from human rights training. However, these activities should address more directly the needs and expectations of this target group, in particular by emphasizing economic, social and cultural rights and the practical aspects of training sessions.
