Lesson Learned:

Software and tools developed in a project may have different applications beyond the initial concept. In spite of the issues linked to different understandings of “Maidan” app,  the tool has potential to be highly useful and efficient for journalists and other actors alike. It is important for both the grantee and UNDEF to consider other applications of specific software development or upgrades beyond the scope of the project for sustained impact.

Lesson Learned:

The training materials and techniques were effective. The training was based on a standardised 57 page training manual covering everything from training techniques through to democracy and human rights issues, the international and local context and laws, human rights mechanisms, the security and responsibility of journalists, defamation, use of social media, and professional skills – preparing, authenticating, cross checking reports, handling sources etc. The training involved a combination of lectures, group work and field visits.

Project: Media and art as catalysts for free speech and access to information in Jordan

Lesson Learned:

The project had a positive impact on the artists involved and to a lesser extent the journalist trainees. The Freedom Messenger artists interviewed saw the project as opening a door to new audiences and new ideas for their work. However this was limited by the funds made available to them. The journalists interviewed were similarly enthusiastic and saw positive benefits from their participation in the training and in the Freedom Messengers Network.

Lesson Learned:

The system of using the grantee’s institutional website as a place where concerned persons could have their reports posted was sustainable as long as the grantee in Georgia is in a position to continue to maintain its website. At the time of evaluation, the reports were still posted there and available to read. Having gained the experience of operating this type of a project, the grantee has extended also extended to other projects related to civic education.
